Hoyland Surname - One Name Study
I've just started this one name study into Hoyland, my mother's maiden name. As it develops it will probably need it's own website but initially it can sit here alongside my family history.
The project is registered with the Guild of One Name Studies - no..............
The aim is to eventually research Hoyland's throughout the world, both past and present, and to share the findings with anyone interested.
Currently there are an estimated 1900 living people in England, Wales and the Isle of Man who use the Hoyland surname.
There were just 384 Hoylands in the US census for the year 2000.
I wonder if all Hoylands have come from a single common ancestor or have more than one origin?
The Hoyland surname is most likely from the Hoyland place names near Barnsley in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The town of Hoyland grew from the hamlets of Hoyland Nether, Upper Hoyland and Hoyland Common. There are also the villages of High Hoyland and Hoylandswaine. Hoyland is Norse meaning 'farm on a hill'. Of the 1114 people with the name in the 1881 census for England and Wales, 792 were from the West Riding of Yorkshire.
