Thomas Scrivens was the fifth of twelve children. Census records and his death certificate show he was an agricultural labourer. He died aged 64 of 'Disease of Heart' and was buried at Stoke Gifford.
In 1871, Thomas's widow, Maria, was a Char Woman and their two youngest sons who were both agricultural labourers were living with her. Some time after this Maria entered Bristol City Workhouse where she was to die of smallpox in 1876.
Peter Higginbotham's excellent Workhouses website gives details on all aspects of life in the workhouses and the history surrounding them - www.workhouses.org.uk. The site includes a plan of the Bristol Workhouse at Stapleton showing the
location of the isolation hospital where Maria would have ended her days. Her body was taken back to Stoke Gifford to be buried with her husband.
